Pakistan: Christian & Women Persecution

The United States State Dept. has for 14 years refused to acknowledge the persecution of Christians in Pakistan. This transcends Republican & Democratic Party Presidents, Bush & Obama.

Status of Women: The World Economic Forum ranks the country as the least gender equitable in the Asia and Pacific region. The 2012 annual report from the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan details many challenges women there face, including being “attacked and killed on account of asserting their rights to education, work and generally for choosing to have a say in key decisions in their lives.”

Abduction & sexual abuse of Christian girls:

Christian girls (ages 12-25) are routinely kidnapped by Muslims, forced to “convert” to Islam, and forced to marry a Muslim man. A report by the Movement for Solidarity and Peace in Pakistan states that at least 1,000 girls suffer this fate every year. Cases are seldom pursued by authorities. If a case gets to a court, the girls are abused until they declare their conversion & marriage were voluntary. Besides sexual abuse, sometimes they are forced into prostitution & human trafficking.

A Christian boy in Pakistan hanged for falling in love with Muslim girl

April 2016: A Christian boy in Pakistan has allegedly been hanged by Muslims who believed he was attached to a Muslim girl who lived opposite his brother’s house.

A report in the Pakistan Christian Post cites an investigation from The Voice Society which concluded 18-year-old Qaisar Masih was killed by the girl’s family in an attack led by her father, Mohammad Billa.

Christian Woman Gang-Raped in Pakistan as Attacks Against Believers Escalate

A Christian woman in Pakistan was brutally attacked and gang-raped by two young Muslim men while her husband was away serving in the army.

The attackers also threatened the woman’s young daughter, the British Pakistani Christian Association said on Monday, forcing her to comply to their demands.

“The men treated me like an animal, telling me I was a worthless Christian, but I know my God is a great God. When I screamed they told me that they knew my husband was away and that I was unprotected. They threatened to kill my child if I did not comply with their perverse demands,” said the victim, 30-year-old Asia Mushtaq from the Toba Tak Singh district.

“They said Christian women are all whores and they would come back and repeat their debauchery if I ever told anyone. I feel so unclean now, but have done nothing wrong. I want these men to be punished and hope the law will protect me,” she added.

The husband, 32-year-old Shakil Khan, was on duty in Peshawar at the time serving the army.

The Muslim attackers knew that Khan was away when they entered the family home at night and attacked Mushtaq. They reportedly bound her wrists and ankles to the bed, before raping her, and threatened to kill her 2-year-old daughter if she resisted.

The Christian woman reported the violent attack at Rajanan Police Station first thing in the morning, and BPCA confirmed that a First Information Report has been registered.

The alleged rapists have since been apprehended by the police, the human rights group said, but because they come from wealthy and influential families, the Pakistani Army has so far refused to offer assistance to Khan as he pursues justice for his wife.

“Another woman finds herself a target of the whims of brutal Muslim rapists in Pakistan, in a society that targets its most vulnerable community: Christians. Furthermore, this time a soldier, whose only desire was to serve and protect his country, has found that the majority of his country do not feel the same way about him,” said Wilson Chowdhry, chairman of the BPCA.

“Moreover, the army he serves has offered little or no protection despite threats being made against him and his family. It pains me to say this but the complex acts of betrayal leave me feeling that Christians have no place in Pakistan’s theocratic society,” Chowdhry added.

Christian girls and women have been subjected to increasingly violent attacks this past year at the hands of Muslim attackers. Sardar Mushtaq Gill, a lawyer with Legal Evangelical Association Development in Pakistan, said earlier this week that at least five Christian girls have been been kidnapped, married off and forced to convert to Islam in April alone.

“In April in the area of Kasur alone, five Christian girls were kidnapped and converted to Islam and forced to marry their captors. These girls are denied the legal protection of individual rights,” Gill told Fides News Agency.

On many occasions Pakistan’s local police has failed to register a First Information Report of the crimes, reflecting the persecution that Christians in the country face.

Gill argued that the ‘phenomenon continues to have unacceptable proportions,’ with a number of cases each year of Christian girls being forced into Muslim marriage going unreported.

-State Dept. Ignores Pakistan’s Poor Record of Christian Persecution

by Dr. D ~ April 19th, 2016.    Answers For the Faith

Pakistan is consistently ranked among the worst countries in the world for Christian persecution. Yet the US State Department seems to continue to ignore that fact when they list the nations that they are particularly concerned about when it comes to religious freedom abuses. Here’s the story from CNS News:

For a record 14th year in a row, the State Department has overruled the advice of an independent statutory watchdog and decided not to blacklist Pakistan for religious freedom abuses.

Christian girl kidnapped, raped and forced into Muslim marriage, father murdered

by Ruth Gledhill, Christian Today Contributing Editor 19 July 2016

A girl aged 14 has been abducted, raped and forced into an Islamic marriage in Pakistan. Her father was shot dead when he sold his house in an attempt to buy her freedom.

Mehwish Masih, who left school early because her family could no longer afford the fees, was hired as a part-time cleaner at a house in Faisalabad, according to the British Pakistani Christian Association (BPCA).

She was asked to stay late to help at a party in March, and did not return the next day. Her parents soon afterwards received a copy of her Islamic marriage certificate in the post.

Her father Tanveer Masih, a rickshaw driver, sold his home in the Faisalabad slum of Khalid Colony to pay for a lawyer who managed to get the abduction registered as a crime. He was asked by relatives of his daughter’s new husband to drop the case and when he attended a rendezvous he was murdered by two unknown gunmen.

Mehwish’s mother Najma Bibi said: “The police have not done anything substantial to help my daughter, we now have no money to defend our rights and without my husband we have no voice. We live in a hopeless situation, we need help. I pray that my daughter will continue to place her hope in Jesus Christ.”

BPCA– Mehwish Masih was kidnapped and forced into an Islamic marriage.

Wilson Chowdhry, chairman of the BPCA, said it is estimated that 700 Christian girls are kidnapped raped and forced into Islamic marriage every year in Pakistan.

“That figure is said to be extremely conservative by Christian NGO’s and we continue to assert that many cases are unreported. People in the west express great consternation that little is done to seek justice for kidnapped daughters. Well here we see the result of taking action against the perpetrators – a father has been murdered.

“So many factors have to be taken into account during such incidents and I commend families who strive for justice, but equally I understand why so many choose to do nothing bearing the pain to save what is left of their families. Usually it will be the sons that are threatened but in this case the absence of sons meant the rapists could kill the father leaving the family without a patriarch and reciprocally without a voice.”

Mostly White Congregations does not mean Racism.

The many statements of racism being systemic in predominantly white churches are not accurate in my (white) opinion. The references frequently in PC(USA) conversations online, and even on some TV Christian sermons of other denominations, contain this attitude, seemingly based upon the preponderance of white people, sometimes 90%, in some congregations, like ours. We are open to anybody, and have been for decades. We have had African-American Elders, and there is no discrimination going on.

A black preacher on TV (not PCUSA) speaking recently to his 99% black congregation, referred to the lack of white people in his congregation as indicative of racist attitudes – by we whites of course. It wouldn’t dawn on him that the absence of many black worshipers in our service could be seen the same way in reverse.

It’s the same faulty racial view that shows up in so many places, in and out of our denomination. My reply is, why don’t the African-Americans come to the predominantly white churches in larger numbers? The answer is the style of service, the sermon content and delivery style, the hymns (traditional, gospel, contemporary). It is apparent to me that different races and nationalities prefer their own style of worship, as they do in music, literature, movies, and all other cultural expressions.

We have a Ghanian service held in our meeting hall every Sunday afternoon. It has the style of preaching and music, and even some language mixes, that they prefer. Fine.
White people are entitled to their own tastes in culture, including worship, as are other races.

These pictures refer to the loving memories the grieving person has for the long-time spouse or close loved one who has passed on . It encourages the person to think of the good experiences as a way of strengthening them. This method of offering sympathy is more constructive than just saying “sorry for your loss”, which leaves the person in the pits.

“I AM” – the God of Exodus 3:14

“I AM” – the God of Exodus 3:14

by Stephen E. Schlarb

Scientists in the 1990s proved mathematically (by quantum mathematics and string theory) that space-time is not the ultimate description of reality. These are not necessarily religious people, some are atheists. They have no comments on religious matters.

.
Einstein proved in the early 1900s that space and time are a connected continuum — spacetime. There can be no space (with all the material objects moving, combining and breaking up) without time.  But what caused or created this spacetime universe is beyond both space and time. It is a timeless mode of Being that is the “ground” of all material existence in the universe..
.
No one can prove the existence of a God. But what can be, and has been proven is that if there is a God, there can only be one kind of God — a timeless God who does not change — an “I AM” kind of God.
.
All the other gods of ancient mythologies are gods in the Sun (RA in ancient Egypt) and in other natural phenomena — rivers, mountains, lightening, animals, etc.  High Hinduism believes the ultimate One or Source or “GOD” is in all natural phenomena, including fire.  But science has shown that there is no god contained in the natural phenomena themselves.
.
1 Kings 19:11-12. (NASB)

“And a great and strong wind was rending the mountains and breaking in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the LORD was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of a gentle blowing.

.
We are aware that the scholars say that Exodus 3:14 can be “I am who I am” or “I will be who I will be”.
That’s because the grammar can be interpreted either way — or both ways. It means “I AM WHO I WILL BE” — a simultaneously existing and unchanging God.
 .
This verse actually represents the most sophisticated interpretation of God in all of history. It is indeed the only kind of God who could exist.
.
The origins of this verse are traditionally attributed to Moses or his assistants (c. 1400 BC); or by scholars to the Yahwist author (c. 950 BC); or to the Elohist author in the northern kingdom (c. 750 BC before it was destroyed in 722 BC).
.
Now Heraclitus developed the early theory of the Logos in Greece about 500 BC; Plato and Aristotle, of course, are much later. Buddha in India is thought to have lived around 500 BC. Confucius in China was about the same time frame.  These are some of the greatest  thinkers in history. But none of them came up with as sophisticated a concept of a God as did the author of Exodus 3:14. Yet this author precedes all these famed ancient sages.  All concepts of God have been eliminated, except the Exodus 3:14 God.
.
Either this ancient Hebrew (c. 750-1400 BC) is a unique genius, or it is actually real revelation from the one true God.

Was Jesus a Yahad (or Essene)?

Was Jesus a Yahad or Essene?

by Stephen E. Schlarb

There is a difference of opinion on the Qumran community being Essene or Yahad. Either way, this article makes the argument that Jesus had specialized training at Qumran, before entering into his public ministry.

John the Baptist refers to Jesus as the ‘Lamb of God’ (John 1:36). John apparently recognized Jesus and knew of his mission right from the start. Could they both have known each other as adults at Qumran?
Jesus had learned some specialized teachings as an adult, beyond carpentry, and at a place unknown to his critics in Galilee:
In Matthew 13:54-56
He came to His hometown and began teaching them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished, and said, “Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?  Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not His mother called Mary, and His brothers, James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? And His sisters, are they not all with us? Where then did this man get all these things?”

Jesus stated:

“there is nothing concealed that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known.”  Mk. 4:22, Mat. 10:26, Luke 8:17.
The Pharisees and Sadducees did not hide their teachings. The Yahad hid their teachings, confined them to the initiates, and taught that their wisdom should not be shared with common people and sinners.

Jesus revealed his teachings to sinners and outcasts. Jesus could have been a Yahad who rebelled at keeping the spiritual truth away from the most needy people.
It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick; I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” Mk. 2:17.

The Yahad Charter in column 11 (3,14) Dead Sea Scrolls: “By His (God’s) righteousness is my transgression blotted out. Through His exceeding goodness shall He atone for all my sins.”

If Jesus learned this with the Yahad, he may have realized that someone had to fulfill this role for the salvation of not only his people, but for all people. Otherwise the religious practices themselves were futile.

Jesus’ first 3 Beatitudes (Mat. 5:3-5) –
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

5 Blessed are the gentle (or humble), for they shall inherit the earth.

In the Qumran Scrolls (part of the Dead Sea Scrolls), there is Thanksgiving Hymn 33 which contains the following:

“Blessing to the humble, troubled of spirit, and those who mourn.”

In 1QM (14,7) there is the term, “needy in spirit” or “poor in spirit”. This is interpreted by experts in Hebrew as meaning “needy of God”, regardless of how much money a person has.

The Qumran scrolls are dated from approximately 250 B.C. to about 65 A.D. They are in Hebrew and Aramaic, and were solely in the possession of Jews. The references to “poor in spirit” were phrases already known to Jews who had access to this teaching.

Jesus could have left the Yahad group and determined to bring the higher spiritual teachings to outcast and rejected people. Eventually this would lead to the inclusion of not only outcast Jews, but all people (Mat. 15:21-28).

Jesus saw himself as the agent – the Son of Man in Daniel 7:13 – and referred to himself as such many times:
Mark 2:10, 2:28; 8:31, 8:38; 9:9, 9:12, 9:31; 10:33, 10:45; 13:26; 14:21, 14:41, 14:62.

Jesus may have had a ‘Messiah complex’ – he may have seen his role as the sacrificial Lamb of God for all the people. Or, Jesus really is the sacrificial Lamb of God.
